The year is sure flying by. Cross country for Jeremy was done on Oct 10, and it has been mercifully quiet mostly since then.
I still make yogurt, sandwich bread, tortillas. Alex still makes red/pizza sauce, bbq sauce, cereal, dried fruit, potato chips, salad dressing - most meals from scratch. We have given up trying on bagels & pita breads, and are back to buying those. I'm also not trying to make hamburger/hot dog buns again - those REALLY didn't turn out well (the hot dog ones anyway). So mostly our cooking is still a very-often thing, but not the stress of every day usually.
I have changed to doing 2-3 loads of laundry every morning (M-F) instead of trying to do it all on Mondays. Mentally it is sure a nice change. I always used to dread Mondays.
Jeremy continues with band, and his regular 6th grade load. He hates practicing for band, but he plays very well, relatively speaking. He's done at least one youth group activity, well maybe two, since the beginning of the school year. He's been saving like crazy, doing extra jobs, and finally was able to order a brand new iPod Touch this past weekend. He is so excited! Should arrive hopefully sometime later this week.
Joanna is doing well in preschool, continues to enjoy (after that brief few week period of not wanting to eat her snack and having a rough time, thinking the teacher was yelling at her every time) herself. She just had her first dental checkup last week, and she was a star patient! No cavities for her, and likely no braces, as her teeth are very nicely spaced (not so for Jessica). She has had one dry overnight in the last few weeks, but definitely nothing consistent. She continues dry during the day, I don't worry about her there. She currently has a cough and runny nose - not sure if allergies or a cold or ?? Joanna goes most days without her hair up now that she has it cut shorter. She looks much better (we think).
Jessica has fluid at least in one ear, and one ear no longer has a tube (it's been working its way out since at least late July). We're in a holding pattern, as she doesn't have an infection (yet), so we don't want to rush in and put new tubes in, plus an adenoidectomy, unless she truly needs that. Her language continues to blossom nicely. I gave her a several-inch haircut yesterday (off the back), and that helps her from looking so straggly. I can't do her bangs yet - she won't stand still very well, looking around, and I don't want the scissors near her eyes yet.
Can't think of much more right now. I'd sure love someone to let me know they follow this blog, so I know whether there is reason to keep updating it!

How time flies
As I get older, it truly seems that time is speeding up. When Jeremy was just a baby, I remember people saying the time would fly by. It did not, not to me anyway.
Now with 3 kids though, it has definitely started to fly.
Jeremy is greatly enjoying cross-country, has 2 more practices and 2 more meets, then he's done until next year. I think track starts in Feb or March, but not sure. Goodness, what will he do with his extra time? He's still in band this year, so that does take some time every day.
Joanna - reviews are mixed about preschool. In the beginning, she seemed to love it. Then she started having troubles. She kept telling me that the teacher was yelling at her (not true). We THINK that she is just very sensitive (I've been accused of being too tender with my children), and is getting "upset" when another boy from class (who gets in trouble OFTEN) is getting yelled at. Or spoken loudly to. However, you want to put it. She's also decided she no longer wants to eat a snack. That's fine, but I do still have to send one each time. I do know that she is learning - she is reading letters to me (so obviously recognizing them), and pointing out the numbers zero and two. They did one too, but she doesn't point that one out often. Still waiting on Joanna to night-potty-train. She'll be 4 in January, but hopefully she'll get it soon. I've read some kids don't get it (at night) until 5-6 yrs old.
Jessica - she was SO close to being potty trained. Then we put her in a toddler bed (got rid of her crib) and her world changed. She had a major setback in potty training. She had been dry for 6 weeks at night, but has only been dry one night since. *sigh* I know she'll get there, but it is even harder to wait now that she was almost there before. She has many more issues with daytime training now too. Her language/vocabulary skills are finally expanding, which is good. She still has the tubes in her ears, but I don't think they are "in place" but it doesn't seem to matter at this point. She had the one ear infection in late July, but nothing since. We continue to keep a watchful "eye" on things.
I have changed, just this week, from doing laundry one day per week (and being exhausted for at least the next day, somewhat the next 2), to 5 days per week, but fewer loads each day. This might not seem a big deal, but I do think my energy level has already increased because of it. It is nice to know laundry is usually done by noon. I did 3 loads on Monday, then 3 loads Tuesday, then 2 loads today. I'll probably have just one load Thurs, and one on Friday. I didn't think I'd like splitting it up like that, but so far I do.
I've been fighting a sore throat for over a week. Alex finally caught it Monday I think. I'm using Thieves oil blend, and RC oil blend, trying to knock it out, as is Alex. We think Joanna had a touch of it last Thursday, which might have been the start of her not wanting to eat snack at preschool.
I have a book due at the library today but I'm not finished. I suppose I should go read more of it so I can return it on the way to church tonight. I wasn't able to renew.
I'm also working on sandwich bread. Another minute and I'll turn the oven on to preheat for baking it. It doesn't seem to have risen as much as normal, boo.
Alex is on projector duty this month at church. Sometimes that can be a challenge.
I guess that's it for now. Stay warm!

Late August
Of course it has been another month since I posted.
School has been going almost 2 weeks now (minus 1 day). Joanna is getting better at writing her name, and has practiced cutting straight lines at least twice in class. The first week, I rode her via bike trailer to/from preschool both days. The second week, I rode with the bike trailer to get her there, then I walked with the bike trailer turned stroller (all in one now) on the return trip. Guarantees 2 miles of walking, on Tues/Thurs anyway.
Jeremy is busier than he should be. He is in band this year, so is attempting to practice 30 min per day. On Tues/Thurs, he can't manage that, between getting home from cross-country practice just before 5pm, eating dinner, then needing to get football gear on for practice from 6-8pm. Last Thursday was awful, with him staying up until just after 10 to get his homework done after football practice. He will pick one sport for next fall, and not do this again. Thankfully football is over Oct 1 and cross-country is over Oct 10. It'll be his decision which to drop for next year. He still plans to run track, although not sure of which events yet, in the spring. I can't remember if it starts in Feb or March, but I know fairly early. Then of course swimming starts in late May. The exercise is good for him I know, but there is more homework in 6th grade than there was in elementary, plus the trumpet, so he's definitely got a packed schedule. Which means WE have a packed schedule too.
I got to take a little 28 hr get-away last weekend to Women of Faith in Indianapolis. It was good for some down time, time to laugh & be goofy with a group of gals.
We had a visit from Alex's mom the week before school started, right after our vacation to Minnesota/Iowa. She got to see his locker, and he showed her around the school briefly.
My mom is coming to visit today. It's a long drive, so she's still driving as I type. Jeremy has his first two cross-country meets this week, and she'll get to be here for those. Plus we have the church carnival/kick-off for our Wed night groups.
We're still trying to keep up with making most of our own food, but we have decided not to add much of anything to our list (new dinner recipes here & there, but nothing major) for now, just try to keep up. I think the list is pretty extensive already:
Cereal, dried fruit, yogurt, sandwich bread, tortillas, mini pita breads (great for the girls and Jeremy's lunches), bbq sauce, veggie broth, red sauce (used for pizzas, spaghetti etc). A few fun things as we can - potato chips, bagel chips, garlic sesame sticks. Oh yes, and granola bars. We're learning to make double batches to keep from having to make things quite as often. Some things don't work well that way (can't make 2 loaves of sandwich bread, because I only have one pullman-pan).
Of course in the midst of all this, Jessica is still potty-training. She was dry 5 out of 7 nights over the last week, overnight. Her days are decent, as long as I remember to take her to the bathroom every 45-60 min. Joanna is finally, fully day-trained, but is wet overnight still, most of the time.
I'm kind of random for this post, sorry for that. Just typing as I think of things.
I guess I'll close for now. Have a great day!

Late July
I am incredulous that I haven't posted since early April. Time seriously flies!
Alex still loves his job. I love that he gets off work when he is supposed to, 99% of the time. And I love that he cooks dinner for us, most of the time. He got a promotion just before we closed on our house, and that has sure helped with all the "extras" that come with being a homeowner again.
Our sandwich bread is pretty much a staple in our house now, as well as white-whole-wheat flour tortillas, and pitas. I think the mini-pitas turn out better than the bigger ones, but changing to a different recipe helped with the pitas as well as the tortillas. I continue to make yogurt 1-2 times per week, and even Jeremy has started eating it again. I tried "fig" newtons (with a blueberry/strawberry mixture) - they were a pretty good hit. I can't find dried figs around here yet, but hope to make closer to real fig newtons when I do. I tried making sour cream a few weeks ago - that was very successful. I also have started making bagels - they sure don't look as pretty as store-bought, but Alex says after they are toasted/dressed up, that he can't tell a difference in mine vs Einstein Bagels. Not half bad! I also tried hot dog buns - they turned out more like bread-sticks and won't stay together with a hot dog in them. So I will continue to buy those. I have thoughts of trying the same recipe with a hamburger bun shape though, we'll see.
We are all moved into our new house - settled? Ask after the first of the year. Still boxes to go through, but I'd say we're 90% done. Having a bigger kitchen has been a nice change.
Jeremy enjoyed swimming, did fairly well for being in the younger end of the 11-12 age group this year. He has been attending football camp this week, as well as started practicing with the cross-country team this week. I've been told the season is pretty short, but I don't know what it is yet. I think it'll conflict some with football, but actual conflicts remain to be seen after getting a schedule.
Joanna is still anxious for preschool to start. I did ride bikes with Jeremy to the pool for several weeks, with the trailer pulling the girls. It was quite a physical challenge, but I managed. I do plan to do that with the girls when Joanna starts preschool - it IS faster than walking with the stroller for 1.25 miles each way. I do think Jessica will be a bit lost without Joanna in the beginning, while she's gone to preschool. Joanna is probably 50/50 with nap-time potty training, and even went 2 nights in a row dry. So MAYBE she is starting to get it when she's asleep.
Since my last post, Jessica started potty training all on her own. Good days & bad. Her communication is still a challenge - she gets her hearing tested on Tuesday.
Vacation is coming soon. Looking forward to that. More details after we return.
Sorry for such a long gap between posts. I'll TRY to do better.

Moo
I was just reading an animal book to Jessica. I got to the sheep, and she said MOO! Very loudly. And vehemently. It was so cute, made me laugh.

Early April
Almost impossible to believe it's been 2 months since I posted last. Time flies!
Alex still loves his job. I love that he gets off work when he is supposed to, 99% of the time. And I love that he cooks dinner for us, most of the time.
I have been working Mon/Tue evenings (and a few Thursdays) for a local tax place. One more Mon/Tues then tax season is over for me. I have been trying to perfect my sandwich bread recipe - am loving the shaped-pan we bought for it (pullman pan). I make bread usually at least once a week. I tried my hand at homemade pitas over spring break - they turned out pretty good. I'd like to try the regular recipe one more time, then I want to try making smaller ones - easier for the girls to hold and would fit better in Jeremy's lunchbox. We continue to make lots of things from scratch.
We close on our new-to-us house on May 2. We plan to move in over Memorial Day weekend with some help from church friends, but we won't be officially out of our rental until at least the first full week of June. We plan to move small things every-other-day or so, and have much of it done, with just big stuff left to do that last weekend. I will probably end up taking Jeremy to school May 31 & June 1 (or Alex if he takes several days off to help unpack) since we don't want him to have to ride a new bus for the last 2 days of elementary school.
Speaking of which, he is probably back at the elementary by now, but the first half of today, he spent at the middle school, with his classroom (one of 5 fifth grade classrooms), learning what middle school is like, getting the feel of things. He has been quite excited for this day for a few weeks/months. Last summer he was pretty much dreading middle school, his mind completely bypassing 5th grade. But he's done well this year. Honor roll every quarter so far, with one to go. He elected not to play baseball this year, but is looking forward to swimming probably the end of May/early June. He'll have football camp in July, then start 56ers football (5th & 6th grades) when school starts. I think that is 8-10 weeks, then he'll be done with sports until spring track starts.
Joanna is anxious for preschool to start. She is 99% day-trained with potty-training. Night/nap time doesn't seem to be going anywhere yet, but not much "training" we can do there - it'll just happen when it does. We got a hand-me-down bike trailer for the girls this past fall, and just tried it out last weekend - I hope to ride her to preschool (and pick her up), from our new house. It is too far to walk. Trying to save gas $ and get my exercise in whenever I can. I also hope to ride bikes to swim team practice daily, although we'll plan to drive to the meets.
Jessica seems to be our "runt" in the health department at least. She is wearing mostly 2T clothes now (isn't quite 20 months yet) and is tall. She is mostly quiet - doesn't talk much. I have an appt for her to have her hearing tested in early September - some of her words are quite garbled, so we want to make sure, after her 2nd birthday, that she is hearing as well as she should. As far as I know, her ear tubes are still in place. I do think she has allergies and am doing some experimenting with some medicine that the dr prescribed for her. She sure wouldn't be the first in our household to have allergies.
I guess that's it for now. I had a lot to update!

Mid February
I cannot believe how fast time flies these days.
Jeremy is getting an interim appliance before his final round of braces, which could easily be a few years away yet, rather than this year as we originally thought. He gets the spacers for it today, then the appliance next week. I think his mouth will be sore tonight! He is praying to know whether to play baseball this spring/summer or not. He does plan to do swim team this summer and play football this fall. He is showing interest in playing the trumpet, but we'll see. This was a new desire he mentioned just last week.
Joanna is currently in a growth spurt. She is eating quite heartily, which is nice for a change. We hope to register her for preschool on Monday. Can't believe she is 3 already. I would say she is 95% day-potty-trained. Nowhere close at nap/night yet.
Jessica is learning new words all the time, although I doubt anyone else can understand her. She still screeches a lot in frustration though.
Alex continues to love his job. He continues to cook more & more of our stuff from scratch, which is nice. I am helping a good bit too.
I started doing taxes for a one-woman firm here in town last week. I work 2-3 nights per week, just 2 hrs a night. It is nice to get my brain active and get out.
I think that's it in a nutshell right now.

Home cooking
Just read through some of my posts the last few months - I haven't mentioned how much we make things from scratch now. Just in the next days we'll make homemade crockpot yogurt, bagel chips (this is a new experiment), veggie broth/stock (usually 8-11 cups for the freezer-pantry), red sauce (we use it for pizza, spaghetti, meatloaf, anything that calls for marinara/red sauce) - making 6 cups at a time approx, French bread. We'll also dry some fruit both for snacking, and in anticipation of making our own granola-style cereal in another week.
We've made a few other things too - tried our hand at sandwich thins, but we would be making those every week to keep up with our crew, and they weren't the easiest either.
We made homemade pretzel sticks for our trip, as well as home-dried jerky, and garlic-sesame sticks.
Whew! Lots of cooking, but I greatly appreciate my husband's willingness to help us eat more healthily. He does most of the cooking and I keep up with dishes. That's saying alot, for both of us!

A new year
We spent our Christmas vacation traveling - to St Louis, then to KC, then to Garnett, then back home in the reverse order. We had a great trip. The girls were a bit overwhelmed at so much family - Garnett had 48 people for Christmas Day dinner. WOW. Especially Jessica was clingy, Joanna some too. Jeremy got his glasses bent, but the eye dr office was able to fix them on Jan 3, thankfully. Joanna got an ear infection right after Christmas, first noticed the Tues eve after. We took her to an urgent care center in St Louis Thurs early afternoon, so she had medicine and was back to her normal self by that evening. We arrived home New Years Eve, 3pm ET, had dinner out (who wants to cook after all that driving?), then we watched a Redbox movie and played Scrabble until the ball dropped.
Jeremy got a new guinea pig on Saturday. His last fish died earlier today, sad. Both his fish lasted through our trip, with Peppy dying the day after we got home, and Zippy today. Don't know what happened, if that is just how long betas live or what.
Jessica is starting to work zippers - not great for her warm pj sleepers! Probably have to turn around soon.
We had a snow day today, probably 2-3 inches of snow.
I will start training for a new VERY part-time job this next Tuesday evening. I don't know my regular hours yet, but anything will be after 5:30 or a couple hrs on some Saturday mornings. Doing taxes with a Christian tax firm. Very excited about it.
That's it for this update!
